In January 2022, we lost a great mind to the field of histotechnology. If you had to study, more than likely you had her book. She also had heart of gold with a focus on education.
Freida’s contributions to the field of Histotechnology were many – five (5) textbooks, ASCP staining videos, technical publications, ASCP study guides, Kodachrome slide sets, flashcards, workbooks, serving as NSH president, NSH Education Committee Chair, workshop and lecture presenter in local, national and foreign societies and many more!

Deborah Sawyer passed away on October 20, 2021, after over 40 years of dedication to
histology, acquiring her HT and working in all areas including IHC and grossing. She
worked not only at the bench but also taught students, supervised, worked as a traveler
for several years, as well as dedicating over 20 years to NCSH.
While working with NCSH, Deborah was a volunteer and then proceeded to served as the Secretary, Registrar, Treasurer, President, Vice President, and in other capacities as needed,
including as a member of the NCSH Board of Directors when it was still active.
Histology was Deborah’s true passion, and to honor her and her service to NCSH, the
Deborah Sawyer Educational Scholarship is awarded on a nomination basis. The
criteria can be found on the website, and it is currently $500, that will be used over two
years on a reimbursement basis.

Lyle L. Baker passed away on June 16, 2010, leaving behind a long legacy of
mentorship, friendship, and a passion for histology. He was an active and vital member
of the North Carolina Society of Histotechnology (NCSH), the National Society of
Histotechnology, the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), and other
organizations where he held board positions that helped put histology on the map.
After his 20-year career as a Medic in the Navy, Lyle retired in 1973. He continued his
medical career at Moses Cone Health System, serving as Chief Histotechnologist from
1973-1999. He then worked for Greensboro Pathology Associates (GPA), a practice
that Lyle was instrumental in establishing, and retired from GPA in 2005.
Lyle was one of the founders of NCSH circa 1973. He worked tirelessly to recruit
volunteers and lay the foundation for NCSH's successful 50-plus years of success.
In honor of Lyle, NCSH established a scholarship in 2011 that is awarded each year to a
histology student. It can be used for meetings to earn CEUs, access study materials,
and pursue ASCP certification. The criteria can be found on the website and it is
currently $500 that can be used over two years on a reimbursement basis.
